When it comes to daily active users, the non-gaming app world was dominated by familiar giants. In the App Store, YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp lead the pack, each raking in more than 318.4 million, 277 million, and 272.9 million DAU, respectively. Over on Google Play, these figures soared: YouTube boasted over 1.2 billion DAU, Facebook hit 836 million, and WhatsApp almost matched YouTube with a staggering 1.2 billion DAU.
Google's suite of apps claimed their throne in Google Play with apps like Google Chrome, Google, Gmail, Phone by Google, and Google Maps securing the highest DAU numbers. Meanwhile, in the App Store, Chinese apps showed remarkable strength, with WeChat, Douyin (Chinese TikTok), and Alipay stealing the spotlight.
On the gaming front, Roblox was the undisputed champion across both platforms, amassing over 34.9 million DAU on the App Store and a colossal 83.7 million DAU on Google Play. Games like Free Fire and Candy Crush Saga also performed admirably, consistently placing among the top ranks on both stores. Chinese gaming apps dominated the spots from the 2nd to the 4th in App Store, reinforcing their influence in the global market.
September's download champions in the non-gaming sector presented an intriguing mix of Google dominance and fresh challengers. In Google Play, Speech Recognition & Synthesis took the top spot with more than 201.7 million downloads, followed closely by Google Chrome, YouTube, and some Google services. On the App Store, however, it was Threads that stole the crown with 16.3 million downloads, followed by the shopping sensation Temu with 14.5 million downloads, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT rounding out the podium with 14.2 million downloads.
For gaming apps, Block Blast! reigned supreme in the App Store, scoring over 6.9 million downloads. On Google Play, it secured second place with 17.9 million downloads, edged out only by AHA Games: NO WIFI GameBox, which snagged an eye-popping 34.4 million downloads. Evergreens like Subway Surfers and Offline Games - No Wifi Games continued to maintain a strong presence across both platforms.
When it comes to raking in the cash, non-gaming apps had some heavy hitters. YouTube reigned as the king of the App Store, pulling in over $130.8 million in revenue, while in Google Play, Google One was the top earner with $135.4 million in revenue. Across both platforms, TikTok, Disney+, Tinder, and Max: Stream HBO, TV, & Movies all continued to demonstrate massive earning potential.
In the gaming world, Chinese apps dominated the top two spots on App Store, each pulling in more than $90 million in revenue. The viral hit MONOPOLY GO! broke into the top three on both platforms, raking in a combined >$129.9 million from in-app purchases alone, proving that classic board games can thrive in the mobile space.
