TikTok Gets Most Downloads on App Store Again

• For the fifth time this quarter, TikTok, the social video app, was the most downloaded on Apple’s App Store. The app have had 33 million downloads in the first quarter of 2019. It had more downloads than WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube.

• TikTok was also the third most downloaded app on Google Play behind Messenger and WhatsApp but topping Instagram and Facebook. WhatsApp had 199 million installs during the first quarter on Android.

• Google created a video-sharing app, YouTube Kids for younger audiences to have a safe space to interact with content. The app received 29 million downloads, a growth of 291% from the previous quarter.

Insight

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance prides itself on having one of the few apps with a following almost as big as those owned by the duopoly. The app has grown beyond expectation, never mind that it is restricted for children under 13 years old. The Federal Trade Commission restricted the app in the U.S following an alleged violation of children’s privacy. TikTok paid $5.7 million as fine settlement for the charges which was not so much from a company that got more than a billion downloads in February alone. The app is available in China, but Sensor Tower’s data did not have those download figures.

TikTok has grown popular, but it is still behind on its advertising business, at least going by estimates that show Amazon, Facebook and Google to be top performing players in the digital ad market in the U.S. The app makes money off videos generated by users from different sources. TikTok sold $5.5 million worth of digital coins, a 243% growth from the year before. People use the currency in the apps as rewards for the content creators they love and as digital gifts.

The advertising approach taken by the app is starting to change. This year, the company began trying sponsored video to direct users to a website. The testing period is looking to try out advertising in the U.K and the U.S. Earlier on, ByteDance bought Musical.ly, an app popular with U.S teens and moved the users to a revised version of TikTok.
